Lowndes Hammers Pebblebrook 47-7 A week after allowing 26 points in the fourth quarter, the Lowndes Vikings responded by taking their frustrations out on the Pebblebrook Falcons. The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders in their second game of the season, crushing the Falcons 47-7 on Friday night at Martin Stadium. It was clear domination by the No. 2 team in the state from start to finish. Lowndes piled up 414 yards of offense to Pebblebrook’s 119 yards. Vikings quarterback Cole Parker completed 5 of 6 passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns. Pebblebrook’s lone score came on a 45 yard run by quarterback C.J. Goodman against the Vikings’ JV squad in the fourth quarter. “It felt good,” Vikings coach Randy McPherson said. “We worked hard all week. The kids came out and played hard. They played the whole game.”
Lowndes Contains Comets in 34-26 Victory
The South Gwinnett Comets stormed back from a 28-0 fourth-quarter deficit with 20 straight points, but a key fumble recovery by Chris Scurry and an ensuing 69-yard touchdown run by Troy Braswell helped lift the Vikings to a nail-biting 34-26 victory in their season opener. “We played three quarters tonight,” Vikings head coach Randy McPherson said. The Vikings scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third to take a commanding 28-0 lead on the Comets. But a series of uncharacteristic miscues by Lowndes opened the door for a comeback.
Vikings Take Down TCC 49-14 in Pre-Season Game
The Lowndes Vikings gave their fans a scare, allowing an opening touchdown drive on defense and fumbling the ball away on their first offensive possession, but it didn’t take long for the Lowndes everyone has come to know to show back up. The Vikings forced a three-and-out on their second defensive possession and only needed two plays to go 95 yards for a touchdown on their second offensive series as they beat the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets 49-14 in a preseason game on Friday at Martin Stadium. Troy Braswell carried the ball nine times for 157 yards and a touchdown, Cole Parker completed 5 of 8 passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns and Tyler Hunter caught three passes for 41 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Vikings’ varsity offense tallied 297 yards in its three quarters of work, while the Vikings’ varsity defense held the Yellow Jackets to 171 yards in three quarters and forced three turnovers. “TCC is a great team, but everything seemed to be clicking on offense for us,” quarterback Cole Parker said. “The run game and the pass game were going for us which made for a great night.
10 Vikings Sign with Colleges on National Signing Day Telvin Smith sat at a table, surrounded by family and friends, debating the biggest decision of his young life. The standout linebacker said on Monday that he would sign with Florida State, but as he sat at the table with a pen in his hand, he stared at two different packets of paper: One from FSU and one from Georgia. Smith had truly not made up his mind on which school he wanted to attend. Finally, he smiled and signed the one with the Florida State logo on it, fulfilling the verbal commitment to the Seminoles that he made last fall. "I had Georgia papers on the left side and I had FSU papers on the right side, Smith said. "I was kind of going back, thinking in my head what I was going to do. In the end, I said, ˜I think I'm going to go with Florida State, because I feel that's where it started, and that's where I'm going to finish., Smith said picking between FSU and UGA was a very difficult decision, but he ultimately picked the place where he thought he would fit in. He said the fact that former teammates Greg Reid and Gerald Demps are at FSU didn't play a major role in his decision. "At the end of the day, it's going to be me on the field and in the classroom, Smith said. Nine other Vikings also signed letters of intent on National Signing Day. Over the last four years, the 2009 class has helped the Vikings to a 42-8 record. From their sophomore season on, the 2009 seniors went 36-4 and 8-2 in the playoffs. They won the state championship in 2007. "This is a very good senior class, Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson said. "It's a good group of kids character-wise. Good academics; they were real concerned about their grades. They're good athletes and good people. They represented Lowndes High well with character and honor. We're going to miss them. "There are several seniors that didn't sign scholarships today who are very good academically, and are going to move on to the next level at whatever, McPherson said. "They might not play football, but every kid in this senior class is going to be successful. Region 1-AAAAA Down to Five Teams After Realignment Region 1-AAAAA will shrink from eight teams to five teams. Valdosta, Lowndes , Colquitt County, Coffee and Tift County are staying in the region, while Warner Robins, Northside and Houston County are all moving down to AAAA. The departure of the three Warner Robins schools will eliminate long trips for region games, especially for Valdosta and Lowndes . The GHSA's rule that no team can travel more than 200 miles round-trip for a game on a school night made scheduling region games with the Warner Robins schools slightly difficult. Valdosta, Lowndes , Colquitt and Coffee could only play games against a Warner Robins school on a Friday or a Saturday. That will not be a problem any more. On the other hand, the smaller region will create another dilemma, particularly for the region's football teams. With three fewer schools in the region, more non-region games will have to be scheduled. That means that each 1-AAAAA football team must now schedule six non-region games. "Well, it's going to be tough for scheduling and finding games, but that's what it is," Lowndes High football coach Randy McPherson said. "Most of the time, non-region games are at the beginning of the schedule. It's going to be hard, really hard. The reason is because not a lot of other teams are looking for those games. Weeks four, five and six will be real hard to find a game." McPherson says he will look into scheduling AAAAA schools from metro Atlanta and along the Atlantic coast. "I'm going to try to contact anybody," McPherson said. "I'm going to do my best to find six games. I think we've got a deal with Peachtree Ridge. Ware County is subdivided. They said they wanted to play, but now it depends on how their region fits." McPherson also admits that he will miss the hard-fought games his team had against Northside, Warner Robins and Houston. "We're going to miss the competition with the Warner Robins schools. Those were good games and good competition. I thought they brought a lot to our region. I would have liked to see them stay," he said. Four teams from each region make the playoffs in each sport, so going from eight teams to five will make it easier for 1-AAAAA teams to make the postseason. |
